A pushrod is a component used in certain types of internal combustion engines, particularly in overhead valve (OHV) engine designs. It is part of the valvetrain system and serves to transfer motion from the camshaft to the engine's valves.
In an OHV engine, the camshaft is positioned lower in the engine block or cylinder head, while the valves are located higher up. The pushrod connects the camshaft to a rocker arm or a lifter, which in turn actuates the valve. As the camshaft rotates, it pushes the pushrod upward, causing the rocker arm or lifter to move, opening or closing the valve.
The pushrod is typically a long, slender metal rod with threaded ends. It needs to be precisely designed and manufactured to withstand the high forces and temperatures inside the engine. Pushrods are commonly made of steel or alloy metals.
In contrast to pushrod engines, some modern engines use overhead camshaft (OHC) designs where the camshaft is located directly above the valves, eliminating the need for pushrods. OHC engines generally allow for more precise valve control and higher RPM limits, but pushrod engines can be more compact and cost-effective for certain applications.
